North Carolina Inmate Search

Updated on: February 21, 2024
North Carolina

As stipulated by state and federal laws, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety provides inmate information to the general public with a prisoner lookup service. It's a database of active and inactive offenders and those on parole and probation.

The NCDPS has information on inmates that date back to 1972, and you can use the inmate locator search engine to find inmate releases, most wanted criminals, and fugitives. However, data kept by this government agency doesn't include details of city and county jails, for which you'll have to find that facility's roster.

To search for inmates currently incarcerated in North Carolina, enter one or more search parameters into the offender search, including;

  • Offender status
  • Last, first, and middle initial of the inmate's name
  • Offender number
  • Gender, race, and ethnic group
  • Birth date and age range

The page that results from your search will contain all the inmates that match your North Carolina offender lookup criteria, especially if you haven't specified an offender number.

Select an offender number to see that inmate's profile page containing a mugshot, if one is available, incarceration location, custody details, and basic physical description. Other information provided includes the offender's date of birth, age, race, and sex, plus any infractions the inmate has committed while in prison.

There's also a definitive sex offender register maintained by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, where you can search using the suspect's name or location. Once you've accepted the terms and conditions, you can initiate a search to find the legal name, known aliases, and primary address of a perpetrator.

Click on the name to see front and side profile photos of the offender, date of birth, physical description, and information on the committed sex offense. The registration type segment alerts the offender's status according to the register, and you'll see whether they're compliant or recidivist.

You may also try searching the NC most wanted fugitive database maintained by the NCDPS or North Carolina Department of Public Safety. That's in case your inmate has absconded from parole or probation supervision or escaped custody.

North Carolina Inmate Roster

You may not find the inmate you're looking for on the resources provided by the NCDPS or the sex offender register from the State Bureau of Investigation. That could mean they're not incarcerated by the state but by an individual county or city law enforcement and corrections department.

Information provided by North Carolina jail rosters includes a mugshot and the offender's physical description alongside their offense. You can read on dates detailing their process through the county correctional and justice systems with these up-to-date inmate locators.

If there's no website for county or city police and sheriff offices, you can visit their locations and enquire about an offender's whereabouts. Using the person's name, you can call or visit the jail and request to query their inmate roster for persons arrested in that county.

Inmate roster records are updated each time a prisoner is moved, receives visitations, and is medically tested. That helps you find information about an offender's whereabouts, and there's an entry when more charges are added to their offense sheet. The same happens if they've committed infractions while incarcerated.

You'll also find details on an offender's court progress, including the courthouse and judge they're docketed against. North Carolina inmate rosters unify all agencies that process inmates, whether law enforcement, justice, and correctional entities. It's easier to discover an offender's charges, sentence, and expected parole or release dates from the most detailed county and city jail roster.

About the North Carolina State Department of Corrections

With its history from the 1870s, the North Carolina Department of Corrections manages incarceration facilities and activities in North Carolina. The agency doesn't operate any private prison facilities and was merged with other departments in 2012 to form the North Carolina Department of Public Safety

The mission of the NCDPS is to preserve and safeguard life and property for the state's citizens through protection, preparation, and prevention with honor and integrity. Its employees supervise inmates in prison, juvenile centers, and the community for probation and parole.

Other departments incorporated with the NVDPS include emergency management, the National Guard, state highway patrol, capitol police, and victim services. Besides an offender search, resources offered by this state agency include a missing person's database, collision information, background check, towed vehicle search, and safety tips.
