New York Inmate Search

Updated on: February 5, 2024
New York

If you want to find an inmate in any of New York State's correctional facilities, a few steps are involved, one of which is gathering the expected information. That includes the offender's full name, and your search will prove more effortless if you've got their Department Identification Number or DIN.

The incarcerated lookup on the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is automated. It's available for 24 hours except for an interval between 11.30 pm to 11.45 pm eastern standard time. That outage allows for maintenance procedures while server maintenance happens on Saturday from 11.30 pm to Sunday at 12.30 am EST.

Once you've got all the details necessary to locate an inmate, head to the NYSDOCCS official website, where you'll find an incarcerated lookup page. You may also use that inmate's New York State Identification Number, an ID provided by the DCJS or Division of Criminal Justice Service.

While it's intended for criminal justice agencies, using the NYSID to make your search won't prevent you from accessing that inmate's records. You can perform a New York inmate lookup by name, whether exact or partial, but it's best when the parameters are accompanied by the offender's date of birth.

If you're armed with either the DIN or NYSID, you can skip the name or date of birth parameters and proceed to start your search. Click the Submit button to review the results of your search for inmates currently incarcerated by the New York State Department of Correctional Services

The generated details include the following;

  • Inmates DIN
  • Name and gender
  • Date of birth and custody status
  • Race and facility

Additional information is available by clicking the DIN, which will display where the inmate is currently held or whether they're on parole or probation. Besides indications of the county the offender was indicted, this page may also show the inmate's crimes, their sentence, and other dates.

The NYSDOCCS website also offers a comprehensive parolee lookup and a searchable database of the state's most wanted fugitives.

New York State Inmate Roster

New York State Department of Correction's website, incarcerated lookup, is designed to help access a database of inmates in state prisons. While this search engine contains details of offenders confined since 1970, you won't find persons held at county or city facilities.

For that, you'll acquire the county sheriff or city police department's websites, where an inmate locator is often unavailable. That gives you access to the New York inmate roster to see who's in jail if an individual was arrested and arraigned at the county level. The information on these rosters is regularly updated as prisoners in these jails serve sentences of less than two or three years.

County and city jails are also beginning many offenders' incarceration if they don't post bail or are released on their own cognizance after getting arrested. A transgressor will move to state prison after sentencing, and their information won't be available on that jail's roster anymore.

Federal criminals also stay in community county jail for a while before proceeding to federal prison, and if an inmate is released at this point, their records remain on file for at least a year. To find inmates currently incarcerated in a New York county or municipal jail, use the same search techniques you employed for the NYS DOCS lookup function.

About the New York State Department of Corrections

New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is the state government department that oversees the state prison, probation, and parole system. NYSDOCCS has under its charge 44 facilities that are funded by the state, but it doesn't supervise county and municipal jails.

As of 2022, the NYDOCCS incarcerates over 30,000 inmates while its seven regional offices supervise another 28,200 offenders on parole and probation. The agency employs around 28,000 individuals, and out of these, 16,700 are armed and uniformed correctional officers.

The NYSDOCCS's mandate includes the mission to improve public safety by continually providing for the needs of the incarcerated community. It appropriates programs and treatment services in secure and safe facilities to address the successful preparation of individuals when they're released into society.

Some significant facilities under the NYSDOCCS include the Adirondack Correctional Facility in Essex County. Another is the Albion Correctional Facility in Orleans County and the Altona Correctional Facility in Clinton County.
