Nebraska Inmate Search
The state of Nebraska makes it very easy to find inmates incarcerated in any one of the 9 state prisons, 93 county jails, and youth detention centers. All records are searchable, and by heading to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services or NDCS website, you can use the offender lookup function titled 'Incarceration Records.'
You'll enter the inmate's last and first names along with their NDCS ID number into the inmate locator and click Submit. The returned search results may consist of several inmates whose names and identification details match, and each selection will include the offender's:
- Committed and legal names
- Date of birth and DCS ID
- Race and gender
- Custody status, and housing facility
The committed name in the inmate information part may be an alias, so the offender's legal name is displayed in the next column. An inmate's status describes whether they're in custody or have been discharged from the facility, which is listed next.
When you select an inmate's committed name, you're directed to a conclusive page that features further details on an incarcerated offender. Under the DCS ID is a part that details the prisoner's demographics and you've got the option to click for the individual's photo.
An inmate's sentence information follows with dates it begins, parole eligibility, discharge, projected release or review dates, and reason. Offense Information is the last part of this report, and it has a description of the charge, its run code, term, and the county it was committed.
Nebraska's Sex Offender Locator
The state also offers the public a searchable sex offender registry from where you can conduct your Nebraska offender lookup. Search for an inmate with a last and first name after entering these details, or narrow down your locator parameters with the location or county of offense.
Once you've found a sex offender that matches your search criteria, click on the name and see a photo and the location of a map where that person resides. Another view shows you that individual's convictions, the types of crimes they've committed, and when they occurred. Furthermore, along with the offender's home address, you can see any properties or schools they attend.
Nebraska Inmate Roster
Besides the NDCS function to find an inmate in Nebraska, several other options are available that depend on the crime and jurisdiction of the incarcerated individuals. If the inmate is a federal prisoner or has committed a misdemeanor offense at the state level, they'll be found on various inmate rosters around the state.
A recent arrest in Nebraska is processed by county and city law enforcement, which means the individual's records are with the sheriff's office or police department. County jails keep an inmate roster that's more regularly updated than the NDCS or Bureau of Prisons databases for federal offenders.
If you're unsure in which location an inmate was initially prosecuted, sentenced, and processed, use the VINELink system to search conclusively for that offender's location. The database is part of a multi-state Victim Notification network that checks the custody details of adults currently incarcerated in Nebraska.
You can also use the Nebraska Victims of Crime Alert Portal, NEVCAP system to beat checking every sheriff's or police department, or county correctional facility's website for their inmate roster. It's the best way to find where an offender is housed or if they've been assigned to another institution.
However, since the VINELink network isn't available for every Nebraska County, you'll probably perform a site search or call a facility if you're unsuccessful or the county's not a system participant. Failure to that, you're welcome to file for records through the Freedom of Information Act to the NDCS or any other government agency responsible for the inmate's processing.
About the Nebraska State Department of Corrections
All correctional and rehabilitation facilities in Nebraska fall under the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services or NDCS. Its responsibilities include maintaining public safety for inmates, visitors, staff, and everyone concerned.
Using sound incarceration practice and day-to-day vigilance, the NDCS can achieve its mandate of rehabilitating offenders charged and sentenced by the state's courts. Approaches it uses include searches, locked doors, and counts on incarcerated individuals while offering them rehabilitation opportunities.
The Nebraska prison system is straightforward, consisting of a few incarceration facilities but numerous programs and services. Besides high-security measures, the department uses a liberal amount of education and reentry conditioning to keep levels of recidivism down once inmates are released.
