Montana Inmate Search

Montana

Depending on the crime an offender has been sentenced for, the Montana Department of Corrections places them in county jail or state and federal prison. A convicted person or one that's awaiting arraignment and sentencing is held at any of the five state prisons or 37 jails spread across its 56 counties.

If your loved one is held in any of the facilities, you may be obliged to do a search to find info about them.

Inmate search procedure

The official website of the Montana Department of Corrections has an offender search page. Here, you can use an inmate's DOC ID number or their last and first names. If you're unsure of all the details about an incarcerated person, use at least one name, resulting in a list of similarly named individuals in prison.

On the MDOC site, under Offender Search, add your search parameters for a Montana offender lookup, and select Reset or Submit for more information. The next page is filled with results, and by choosing the nearest to your intentions, you'll find each inmate's file on display.

You can deduct from the file information where the inmates currently incarcerated are housed, records of their legal offenses, charges, sentencing, and possible release dates if any. Under Offender Information, there's the prisoner's name, and below that, a conclusive mug shot that captures the individual in front and side profile.

  • The custody status of that inmate or how far along their matter is in the justice system indicates whether they're secure, on probation, paroled, or released.
  • A Last Status Change entry relates to the last time these offenders' cases were elevated or if they've progressed from another to their current statuses.
  • After confirming the inmate's gender, you'll see a line with 'Information Current as of' indicating how long ago the details available on this file have been updated.

Besides the name and correctional facility address, one of the most vital features of the offender lookup tool on the MDOC site is the inmate's DOC ID.

Beneath the offender's basic information, you'll find the physical and demographic characteristics of the inmate listed. These attributes will help identify your desired individual as they contain nuances such as:

  • Hair and eye color
  • Height, weight, and build.
  • Race, skin tone, and whether right or left-handed
  • Place and Year of birth
  • Citizenship and residency

The last section of the MDOC offender search results is titled Legal Record and shows the inmate's criminal charges along with the court docket, judge, and sentence type they've received. Also included are an offense date, penal code, time sentencing was pronounced, and length of incarceration.

Montana Inmate Roster

If you've not succeeded with the official MDOC offender lookup, use the facilities' websites to find an inmate. You'll see jail rosters for Yellowstone, Cascade, Flathead, Broadwater, Fergus, valley, and Missoula counties, alongside several detention centers across Montana.

One advantage of city, county, or state jail rosters is how quickly they're updated, seeing as there's a high turnover of offenders at the justice and rehabilitation system level. Many of the inmates listed in any Montana inmate roster serve sentences of less than two years or are on probation or parole.

Jail records are accessible online for law enforcement to notify loved ones and victims of crime regarding the whereabouts and status of the offender. They follow an inmate from the time of arrest through incarceration, parole, and release, staying on the individual's rap sheet even after their demise.

About the Montana State Department of Corrections

All public-operated and private correctional facilities fall under the Montana State Department of Corrections' jurisdiction, supervision, and regulation. That includes probationary, parole, and special treatment or rehabilitation centers and facilities in the treasure state.

Besides fulfilling the wheels of justice, the primary mandate of the MDOC is to assist society in guaranteeing that offenders are ready for integration into the community if released. It supervises all incarceration and rehabilitation and helps crime victims and offender loved ones by committing to evidence-based recidivism-reducing programs.

While the department's scope is wide and varied, it carries out its duties with professionalism and passion, committed to achieving the goal of crime re-occurrence prevention. The MDOCs objectives include public management, reevaluation of safety practices, improving criminal justice, and increasing inmate success through transparent communication.

Besides an integrated healthcare model in all its facilities, the MDOC invests in citizens for professional growth and success, employing over 1,300 staffers. The department, the third largest in the Montana state government, has also increased housing for medically needy inmates.
