Indiana Inmate Search

Indiana

To find an inmate that's currently incarcerated or was once a guest of the Indiana department of corrections, you must access the DOC website and find the search tool where you'll enter the inmate's last and first name.

If you know the inmate's date of birth, DOC, or offender number, your online search for an Indiana state prison or county jail inmate gets easier. It's also possible to contact the Indiana department of corrections record division at (317) 232-5716 if you're having problems with the automated database.

Your search results will produce records of that individual's incarceration information, including sentencing, custody status, facility, and expected release date. Besides the permanent DOC number, other parameters to enter in your Indiana inmate search are their booking number, state, ICE, FBI, and county ID numbers.

You can also initiate a non-confidential record request for information on an inmate, especially if that offender is in federal prison or has their records restricted. Searches for juvenile inmates will require you to start your Indiana offender lookup from the requisite authorities, such as child protection services or the county sheriff's office

Many Indiana City and county jails offer inmate locator tools on their websites and will publish news and inmate rosters at their discretion. If you want to find an inmate in any of the counties, you can contact the facility or the sheriff's department for an offender's location and status.

Indiana Inmate Roster

The jail inmate roster is a conclusive locator tool you can leverage to find incarcerated inmates in Indiana. Maintained by the Indiana Department of Corrections, rosters provide definitive information on offenders, whether they're in the county, state, or federal penitentiaries.

For instance, the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City is described as a maximum security facility in its roster, along with its physical mail and online addresses. Offenders here have longer sentences than inmates in city or county jails, and they're often involved in vocational training or work programs.

Typical information displayed on an Indiana state inmate roster will include the following:

  • Name and location of the offender
  • Date of birth, charge, and file number
  • Arrest, booking, and release dates
  • Court type, warrant, and probate documents
  • Inmate mug shot, race, sex, and other descriptions

Sometimes you'll find the inmate roster containing comments on the offender's progress, such as return to court or release, discharge, or facility-type orders. If you can't locate your person using the Indiana inmate roster, you can contact the IDOC on the phone or schedule an appointment at the office or facility of interest.

Using Indiana inmate rosters will assist you in finding an offender using their type of offense or court details in any of the two federal, 26-state prisons and 92 county jails. There are two federal penitentiaries in Indiana, both within the federal correctional complex in Terre Haute.

Note that you can only learn of an inmate's release date where such information doesn't put the offenders or victims in danger.

About the Indiana State Department of Corrections

The Indiana state corrections department is the most significant division of the state's legislative and public service due to the increased offender population. It has over 6,000 state-employed and nearly 2,000 contracted staff that operates 19 adult prisons, five juvenile facilities, and ten parole offices.

Every year, around 40,000 offenders come through the Indiana Department of Corrections, IDOC system, and close to 10,000 parolees are under supervision throughout the state. The department has an extensive scope, but every aspect of the operation is aimed at recidivism reduction, public safety improvement, and upholding core mission goals.

It may be massive in the Indiana government, with correctional expenditures above $800 million, but the IDOC is also heavily regulated and monitored for safety or compliance. Each facility is well-equipped with security cameras, and numerous measures are in place to ensure a safe incarceration environment for inmates, staff, and the public.

The IDOCs aim to give offenders worthwhile chances of community re-entry while inspiring a culture of honesty, professionalism, and responsibility. It's committed to these tenets as the gold standard for disciplinary procedures, which create public safety and help its residents become productive members of society.
